We need your help for the 2020 Boulevard Lakefront Tour on Sunday, August 9 as thousands of bicyclists participate in one of Chicago’s longest-standing rides.
The Boulevard Lakefront Tour returns on Sunday, August 9! We hope you will help make this event a success by lending your skills and talents before, during and after the event. We have lots of great volunteer opportunities, both on-bike and on-foot!
Steps to a great volunteer experience:
1. Register and select which jobs you prefer. Job descriptions are listed below.
2. Review all emails from the volunteer coordinator. We will send confirmation of your exact duties and schedule in early-August.
3. Arrive 15 minutes before your shift, and HAVE FUN!
Perks of volunteering:
Active Transportation Alliance would like to thank each volunteer, past and future, for your time and dedication. We could not continue to support biking, walking and transit without you!

Packet Pickup
Packet Pick-up dates and times are TBD
Rest Stops and Water Stops
Help setup one of our rest stops and hand out snacks and water to riders who are stopping for a quick break. Assist with teardown after your rest stop closes.
Ride Marshals
Ride Marshals keep the ride safe, well organized and fun for all participants. Cyclists experienced in bike repair or are medically trained are needed to patrol the route and change flats, make adjustments, attend to minor injuries and help Course Marshals direct the ride. Ride Marshals are chosen based on experience and must be fully self-sufficient out on the course. Ride Marshals will be provided with patch kits and tire levers. Ride Marshals must supply their own pump, allen wrenches, and any supplies necessary to be self-sufficient (we recommend bringing screw drivers, a tire pressure gauge, a spoke wrench, crank wrench and chain tool if owned).
Course Marshals
Course Marshals are the heart of BLT! Volunteers are situated at intersections along the route to direct and cheer on riders. Critical intersections may not always be busy with participant traffic, so bring your lawn chair, radio and snacks and be ready to have a good time with other volunteers!
SAG Drivers
We need safe SAG (support and gear) drivers to pick up cyclists whose bikes quit on them. A personal car is not required; we use car share vehicles. SAG drivers must submit a driver’s license and pass the car share service's driving background check.
Day of Operations
Help our participants enjoy the BLT experience. Volunteers are needed to help with final setup duties, t-shirt and rider number distribution, day-of registration, bike valet, and more!
Post Ride Celebration
Help us welcome back our riders at the post event celebration! Assist with set up, sponsor logistics, bike valet, and more!
Group Volunteering
Active Trans offers a $150 donation to registered non-profit organizations that provide groups of 15 or more volunteers for the day of the event. We encourage schools and charitable organizations to participate! For-profit groups may participate and direct their donation to a charity of their choice. Groups are urged to register early because space is limited! To register your group, Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Brittany Gillespie, at [email protected] for more information. Group leaders must complete a group contact sheet by the Wednesday, July 25 and participate in an orientation.
